Finite Element Analysis of thin plate subjected to flame impingement

Aim of Project

Solve for the equilibrium temperature field of the plate given the heat loads of the flame and radiative heat transfer. Write a finite element program in MATLAB to approximate the steady state temperature in the rod and compare with analytical solutions and an approximate solution from ABAQUS.

Takeaway from Project

The project presents a clear comparison of different element type methods which can be implemented to perform finite element analysis of any system. An important thing that could be learnt from this project is the accuracy with which the results can be obtained for any type of element solutions. The report posted below goes on to illustrate the impact of having different mesh size and how the error norms can be reduces more to get a more accurate result. However, in order to get more accurate result, one has to compromise the convergence rate for that as increasing the element size tends to reduce the change in the error norm values.

Software Used

  • ABAQUS
